The start of a new year is a great time to refocus and make plans for the future.\u00a0 Many people make New year\u2019s Resolutions in the hopes that the coming year may be happier, more productive or generally better than the one that went before.\u00a0 However, resolutions tend to be heavily focused on the \u201cgiving up\u201d side of things.\u00a0 I want to stop eating so much chocolate, I want to spend less time on the computer, I want to lose weight.<\/p>\n

The problem with such absolute goals is they\u2019re easy to fail at.\u00a0 Eat one piece of chocolate on day five and you may feel you\u2019ve abandoned your resolution and may as well accept defeat.\u00a0 In for a penny, you might as well finish that bar off.\u00a0 However, taking a longer approach would be far healthier \u2013 I want to eat less chocolate would be a good place to start.\u00a0 If you usually eat a bar a day, eating half a bar every day is already a massive achievement!<\/p>\n

Why goals are important<\/h3>\n

But why are goals so important to make in the first place?\u00a0 Without a goal, how do you know what it is that you\u2019re working towards?\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t just get in the car and drive \u2013 you\u2019d have a destination in mind.\u00a0 If you\u2019re sensible, you\u2019d also work out a route on how to reach that destination.\u00a0 This is precisely what a goal does for you \u2013 lets you clearly identify what your destination is, and gives you the opportunity to pick the best possible route to get there.<\/p>\n

Setting academic goals<\/h3>\n
