Struggling at the start of the school year? How an online tutor can help

3 October 2022 Quick Guides

Three weeks or so into the school year and the summer holidays are beginning to feel like a distant memory, whilst Christmas is starting to creep up on us all too quickly.  Whilst those first day back nerves are long gone, the reality is that for many people, settling into the routine of a new school year hasn’t left them feeling any better.

Sadly, many students struggle at the start of the school year, and not getting on top of it quickly can have a seriously detrimental impact on the rest of the academic year.  Whether you’ve recently transitioned from Primary School to High School, or you’re moving on to GCSE or A Level subjects, having a wobble when it comes to your education can decrease your confidence and make you doubt yourself.

Here at Tutorspot we understand everyone wants to get off to the best start possible; however, that’s not always easy.  That’s why we have a wide range of A Level Tutors and GCSE Tutors available to help you get back on track.  If you’re struggling at the start of the new school year, read on to find out precisely what you can do to improve things, and how an online tutor can help.

Don’t Panic

Always easier said than done, but the first thing you need to remember when you start worrying about not having the best start to the academic year is not to panic.  Panicking never helped anything, and arguably will just make matters worse.

If you’ve realised that you’re not understanding what your teacher is talking about, or you’re not able to keep up with the homework that’s being set, then it can be easy to start catastrophising your thinking.  Before you know it, you’ve talked yourself into believing you’re just not smart enough, that you can’t do it, and there’s no point in even trying.

Whilst education does come easy to some people, they’re the minority.  For everyone else, a little bit more effort needs to be put in – which means if you’re struggling, don’t worry, you’re just like most other students.

Work out what the problem is

It’s easy to say something along the lines of, “I hate Chemistry.  I’m no good at it.” Yet, the chances are that’s not quite an accurate representation of what’s going on.

Chemistry might not be your favourite subject, and that’s fine, it doesn’t have to be. The reality is, anything we’re not naturally good at we tend to shy away from – so it makes sense that you’re not thrilled to be going into every lesson on the subject.  However, just because you’re struggling with one aspect of the subject doesn’t mean you’re bad at all of it.

Some people aren’t fantastic at running, but it doesn’t mean they can’t do any sports at all.  They might just be better at football or netball or shotput.  Writing an entire aspect of your education off because you’re not instantly understanding a small element of it won’t’ help you make improvements.

Talking to your teacher can help you identify the specific areas you’re struggling with, and from there you may find yourself wanting to work with a Chemistry tutor, an online science tutor or physics and maths tutor. They will be able to provide you with additional lessons and help you grasp the concepts that are perhaps alluding you in the class setting.  Sessions with an online science tutor are designed to move at your pace, rather than the general pace of the class. This means you can ask as many questions as you need to, or your tutor can keep going over points until you feel you genuinely understand them and are able to move on.

Take control of your time

If you’re now working at a higher level than previously, chances are you have more work coming in and being set for you at home.  This means there’s greater pressure on you to manage your time, to ensure you complete everything that’s being asked of you.

Failure to manage your time effectively can result in work either being missed, or everything being rushed.  If you’re dashing your homework off at 7am on the day it’s due, it’s never going to be a reflection of your best work or what you’re capable of achieving.

Taking the time to give 100% to everything you’re asked to complete will give you and your teachers a better understanding of what your knowledge and skills are in this particular subject.

Ask for help

Your teachers will always do everything they can to ensure you’re able to get the most out of your classes; however, there are limits.  If you find the content is moving too quickly for you it’s unlikely, they’re going to be able to slow the pace down as they have other students to consider and an entire curriculum to go through.

This is precisely why some A Level online tuition or some GCSE online tuition such as online science tuition or working with a Physics Tutor or Biology Tutor may be the right move for you if you’re struggling with these subjects.  A dedicated online tutor is there to help you get to grips with any aspect that you may be struggling with.

It may simply be the case that you have forgotten some of the information you were presented with in the past.  A quick summary and recap of this may be all you need to be able to move on at the same pace as the rest of your classmates.  Perhaps you have misunderstood something in a previous lesson, and as you’re not the expert, you’re not sure how to set yourself right again.

These are the sorts of things a personal tutor can help you with.  They can also provide advice on how to better manage your time, write effective notes, do additional research and set yourself up for great revision success and ultimately better grades.
