Top tips for starting the New Year strongly

5 January 2023 Quick Guides

Schools and colleges up and down the country are preparing to go back this week and for many this may mean the final countdown is officially on when it comes to GCSE or A Level studies.  The Christmas break is a fantastic opportunity to kick back and really relax, making the most of seeing friends and family but the New Year is a great time to start ramping things up again in preparation for finishing the academic year strongly.

How then can you make sure that you really kick of your 2023 studies with a bang and make the most of your newfound energy after those two weeks of relaxation?  Here at Tutorspot we are experts at providing online tutors to support you, no matter what you’re studying, and here are our tips on getting 2023 off to the best possible start.

Be clear on where you want to go

If you really want to make the most of your abilities and achieve the best you can, you need to take the time to be very clear about what it is you actually want to achieve.  Whilst all students may want to “do the best” they possibly can, it’s vital to actually define that.  What does “the best” look like for you?

For one student, it may simply mean securing the grade they’ve been predicted in a particular subject. For another, they may feel that trying to beat this grade by at least one point is a huge motivator for them.  Other students may not be too concerned about what they’ve actually been predicted, but instead will focus on the grades they absolutely do need in order to secure the next step on their academic journey.  If you’re studying your A Levels, then your eyes will no doubt already be turned towards University and conditional offers.

Take stock of where you are

Knowing where you’re going is important if you want to have any chance of getting there; however, it’s also essential that you take stock of where you currently are.  What is the difference between what you want to achieve and what you’re currently able to achieve?

It may be the case that you’re a couple of grades off what you ideally want to secure come the summer.  Or perhaps you’re actually doing really well, but think you can do better you’re just not quite sure how to go about it.

This is the perfect time to loo over your class notes, worksheets and any other information you have to get a better understanding of where your strengths and weaknesses lie when it comes to each subject you’re currently studying.  Knowing where you may have gaps in your knowledge is key if you want to tackle them in a logical manner over the next few months to ensure you can secure higher performance in exams.

Hire a tutor online

If you really want to start the new year strongly then one of the best things you can possibly do is hire an online tutor.  Finding someone who is an expert in their chosen field of study will provide you with additional support and guidance throughout your revision period.

Not only can they help clarify any topics you’re unsure of when it comes to your subject, they can also provide you with valuable insight into the revision process.  Perhaps you’re unsure of what areas to focus on and what information you really need – your online personal tutor can help with this.  They can also help you identify whether mind maps, flashcards or videos is the best medium for you to use based on your own individual learning style.

Tutors aren’t just for revision

It’s important to bear in mind that online tutors aren’t just there to help you during the revision process.  Whilst many students do enlist the help and support of a tutor specifically to get them through their GCSE or A Level revision, the reality is that just as many get them involved long before the exam process starts.

If you’re currently in year 9 and are on the verge of picking your options for GCSE studies, then now is a perfect time to try to get ahead.  Knowing you will need to secure strong passes in subject such as English, Maths and Science, no matter what you plan to do with your career in future years, means you will have to dedicate time to them.  If these are not your strong subjects, then it may be worth trying to get ahead of the curve and putting in some extra work on them now. A good idea is to look at online tutoring. Working with a maths tutor, science tutor or an english tutor could be just what you need to help boost your grades.

For many students, lack of confidence comes from a knowledge gap, and the inability to fill in any blocks during class time.  A personal tutor has the time and ability to work with you on a one to one basis, ensuring that you can cover the ground that you need to in order to really make strong progress.  They will also work with you at a speed that suits you, having no difficulty in going back over old ground if that’s what you need to feel more confident about a particular topic or issues.

Tutors can improve your school learning too

An often unexpected bonus of working with an online tutor such as a biology tutor, chemistry tutor or a physics tutor, is the impact they can have on your day to day classroom learning, too.  As you become more confident in your knowledge of a particular topic you’re likely to find yourself engaging more in class discussions, raising your hand to answer questions and even asking questions around the subject to improve your general understanding and knowledge.

Whether you’re looking for an online maths tutor, an online english tutor, or an online science tutor, we can help.  Simply use our online search tool to find a physics and maths tutor, or any other subject tutor that sounds perfect for you and you can get in touch with them directly.
