Why it’s important to finish the school year off with a bang

8 December 2022 Quick Guides

As Christmas looms and 2022 draws increasingly closer to the end, it’s worth taking a moment to think how you want to finish off your studies for this year.  True, the academic year will have seven more months in it once the Christmas decorations have been put away, but it’s still worth seeing the Christmas break as a great opportunity to get everything in order.

The power of finishing strong

Finishing this section of your studies for the academic year and taking the end of the calendar year as an opportunity to review your progress, is a great way to start thinking about getting ahead come 2023.  Knowing where you’re currently at, what progress you’ve made, what you still have left to do, understanding your goals and your current limitations or weaknesses are all fantastic ways to ensure that you can do something about them come January.

Taking the time to review such things now ensures that you are focussed and have the beginnings of a plan in place to capitalise on any improvements and academic gains you’ve already made.  So, how do you go about finishing the year off with a bang?  Here at Tutorspot, we know a thing or two about studying, and have a huge range of options available when it comes to finding the right tutoring online; particularly for all of your core subjects – online maths tutors, online science tutors or online English tutors. Therefore, we’re best placed to help you ensure you do finish the year well and can confidently move into the New Year.

List your achievements

One of the best ways to finish this year well is to make a list of all your achievements.  You may want to pay particular attention to the last three months i.e., since the new academic year started, or you may want to take the entire calendar year.  Looking at the progress you’ve made in a particular subject since January may provide you with a newfound respect for all that you have already managed to accomplish.

Make note of what you still want to achieve

One of the first things any of our online tutors do when they start working with a new student whether you’re working with an online maths tutor, science tutor or English tutor is assess what it is you want to achieve with your studies. It may be a case of filling in any gaps in your current knowledge of a particular subject or topic.  Perhaps you want to improve your GCSE predicted grade from a 5 to a 7.  Alternatively, you may simply want to improve your overall confidence within a given subject area.

Whatever your own individual goals are there is no right or wrong – this is your education and ultimately your further education and potential career path.  You are the expert; however, working with A Level tutors or GCSE tutors will help you better define your goals and put a plan in place to ensure you are actively working towards achieving them.

For example, having private math tuition or working with a science tutor or English tutor will help you better define your priorities when it comes to these subjects. An expert tutor will be able to identify any gaps in your knowledge which may be holding you back.  A tutor will not only help you to get a better grade, but they will give you an increase in confidence within a particular topic. All these things offered by a maths and science tutor or a physics and maths tutor, for example, can put in place the stepping stones to ensure your future success in the subject.

Stay focused

It’s really tempting to see the end of this year and the associated Christmas festivities as an opportunity to kick back and completely forget about your studies. However, if you’re keen on making progress and hitting those higher grades come exam time, it’s vital that you stay focussed and maintain routine when it comes to your studies.

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to do this is to hire a private online tutor, an online maths tutor, chemistry tutor, biology tutor or physics tutor for instance.  Working with a tutor will ensure that you have set time each week put aside to dedicate to a particular subject or topic.  That way, if all else fails, and your original plan of studying an hour per day fell by the wayside because you got distracted by Christmas shopping, you will still have your scheduled session with your tutor.

A private tutor will keep you on the right track by keeping you in a solid routine.  Taking the time out to relax is very important, and the last thing any tutor would ever suggest is that you dedicate the entirety of your holiday to study, but it’s important not to go too far in the other direction either.  Excessive time out means that you are more likely to forget things that you’ve already been taught, especially if you weren’t terribly confident in your knowledge in the first place.

Getting back into the swing of things when the new year starts, and term begins again in January can also take a few weeks – especially if you have literally done nothing but binge watch Netflix and eat Ferrer Rocher.  Working with a tutor will keep your brain ticking over and ensure that you not only finish this year with a bang, but you start the new year with one too.

Increase your confidence

Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right”.  The reality is that attitude has a huge impact on performance – so the less confident you feel about a given subject, the chances are the less well you will perform.

Those who enjoy a subject are more likely to spend time on it – performing their homework to the best of their abilities and reading around the subject.  Confidence therefore increases, you feel you’re likely to do better and you’re more likely to invest time in doing additional studying.  Working with a personal tutor will help you gain that confidence, even if you’re starting for a position of low esteem or perhaps not much enjoyment in a subject.
