Third Year Dental Student, tutoring Maths, Chemistry, Biology
Hi! I'm a third year Dental Student, willing to help students with Maths, Chemistry and Biology up to A level.
I have had 3 years experience tutoring. I have tutored a number of maths and science students ranging between year 8 and year 10. I have seen improvement within the performance of these students, but also in their drive to succeed. I have also tutored family members during lockdown and helped with home-schooling and finding creative ways to engage students. I use evidence based techniques to enhance the students learning and progress. I ensure they understand key concepts relating to their subject and specification requirements, and focus both learning and revision on active recall, which has been widely researched and is known to be the most effective way to learn. I am up to date with the curriculum and specification of Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 and A level for all topics I teach.
I have experience both tutoring but also coaching and instructing sailing, which has taught me lots on communication and the importance of planning, yet adapting to different learning styles and therefore teaching styles for effective tutoring. With my previous students, the sessions have involved a quiz to recap on general content knowledge, and the lessons were student led, allowing focus on what they find most challenging. My previous tutoring experience has given me experience in lesson planning. I also coach and instruct sailing during summer months and have done this for 4 years, which has developed my communication skills and the importance of planning yet also being able to adapt to differing learning styles. This has been particularly relevant to my work as a tutor. I use a variety of resources and am willing to set homework. As mentioned in my experience, I base my lessons on active techniques such as active recall or quizzing.
I am up to date with the curriculum and specification of all main exam boards of GSCE and A Levels.
I have tutored my cousin over lockdown quite successfully, and am very proud of the work I have done with her. At the start of our sessions she was very unmotivated and uninspired when it came to maths, but the work we did together in ensuring there was understanding behind each of the key concepts proved to be very valuable, and let to her moving up a class in maths and really improving her engagement and enjoyment. My previous work through this platform as a mentor for EPQ has also proven a massive success, with the student able to feel much more on top of their work, and understanding of how to get the best marks in this task.
