I always try to tailor my lessons as much as possible to the student in order to help them identify and improve on the areas of history they need to the most. I try to start all my lessons with a hook to get my students interested in the topic they are studying, before some form of information gathering whereby the student explores a historical concept or subject to learn the information and facts needed for their assessment at the end of the lesson. It's important that all students are employing the exam techniques needed for the exam board their school follows so all assessed work is adapted in this vain; whether it be introducing KS3 students to exam skills bit-by-bit, to GCSE students marking work together using the exam board mark schemes. At A level essay and source planning are vital part of preparation for public exams, something I regularly do in my lessons. Recording of students' marks is crucial in helping to analyse where their strengths and weaknesses lie and helps them to see how they are progressing. While exam technique is a crucial preparation for students, it's important that they enjoy the fascinating historical topics they get to study. I am always thinking of creative ways to teach each topic, regularly using games, role-play activities and different forms technology to allow students to approach their study of history in new and exciting ways.
