Biography
I am currently studying towards my Master of Science in Economics and Public Policy at the University of Sheffield. Before making the decision to pursue further studies, I worked as a behavioural economist for almost four years. I am passionate about tutoring mathematics and economics, and I have about four years of tutoring experience.
Tutoring Experience
I tutored for a tutoring agency for three years between 2012 and 2015. During my honours year in 2015, I was the head tutor for Economics 1. I have tutored various subjects including English, Afrikaans, Physical Science, Engineering Graphics & Design, and mathematics. Maths is by far my favourite subject to tutor.
Lesson Planning
My teaching methodology is "learn by doing it 100 times". Understanding mathematics requires practice. If you can identify WHY your answers are incorrect, you're 90% there. I encourage all of my students to practice and reflect on their answers consistently. I spend at least half an hour for each hour tutorial planning my sessions. Each plan follows a "three-course meal" set up. I begin my lessons with a recap of the previous session (if it is linked to the current topic) or a short introduction into why the current topic is relevant in the greater scheme of things. The core part of the lesson is structured such that the key principles are understood. This includes examples ranging from very easy, to relatively complex. I end my lessons off with worked example of a hard question.
