Biography
My career has primarily been within the IT industry, but my life's passion has always been Mathematics and the Sciences. Nothing makes me happier than sharing that passion with others. I have a gentle, easy manner that quickly puts students at ease, and helps them gain confidence in their subjects.
Outside of tutoring, I have a 28 year old son and two 8 month old twins! I live on the North side of Sheffield with my wife, twins, three cats, a blind rabbit and a horse. In my spare time, I volunteer with the Samaritans charity, manning the phone lines.
Tutoring Experience
My introduction to tutoring started when my own son was found to have special educational needs. Working with him, he achieved an honours degree and is now an IT/Robotics specialist. From this success, I have mentored and tutored others, with similar success, imparting not only knowledge, but confidence and an holistic appreciation for the subject. I have also tutored adults, on a voluntary basis, in basic literacy and numeracy, and I mentor/tutor Samaritan volunteers in supporting our callers.
Lesson Planning
I believe that the key to lesson planning is threefold:
1. Identify fundamental concepts/knowledge already covered in school, that the student is weak on. Address these weaknesses to build confidence and a firmer foundation.
2. Pre-empt future school lessons, and provide an insight as to what these lessons will cover, to build confidence in the student, in class.
3. React to current school lessons (e.g. ones between tutoring sessions). Review the material and homework, and deliver tutoring to reinforce these lessons.
