Biography
Originially from Manchester, I moved down to London in 2019 to undertake a PhD at UCL's center for doctoral training in delivering Quantum Technologies
My research is focusing on the experimental implementation of nanoscale sensors and quantum computers based on materials such as diamond and silicon. I am extremely enthusiastic about my work and what science can do for society and I hope to pass this same enthusiasm onto my students.
I'm happy to work with students at all levels of education and attainment and I will always make sure I tailor my lessons to the needs of the individual.
1st class, Masters of Physics - University of Sheffield
Distinction, Masters of Research - University College London
PhD, ongoing - University College London
Tutoring Experience
Over the past year, I have been giving weekly lessons on the Edexcel International GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics syllabus. Over this period, I have developed my lesson planning, timing and communication skills to a level that I feel genuinely proud of.
During the pandemic, online lessons have become the norm. While this changes the experience for students, I have developed a system using screen sharing which allows me to discuss and present information effectively and clearly.
The process of working with my student and seeing their understanding of the topics develop has been an extremely rewarding one and I hope to be able to share my knowledge with further students in the near future.
Lesson Planning
After a discussion with the student on which areas they are studying and how comfortable they are with each subtopic, I will develop a flexible teaching plan which best supports the student as they learn topics in school.
In order to bridge gaps in the student's knowledge and ensure they do not fall behind I will initially focus on those those areas in which the student is struggling the most. Once the key areas of understanding have been covered we can progress onto the wider material.
Based on the total time I have with the student, I will either select my subject matter based on student/parent/teacher feedback or aim to cover the whole syllabus.
With regard to individual lessons, we will begin with a period in which I will explain the concepts which are to be studied. I will try to express the ideas at play through from various angles until I feel that the student has gained an intuition for the subject at hand. Each lesson will vary slightly based on the material being taught but in general, we would then work through course material and clarify any areas that the student is struggling with. The lesson would generally end with a short (~5 minute) problem sheet based on exam board questions for that area. However, some lessons may focus much more heavily on a question and answer format, especially near exam periods.
Student Success Stories
During the time we have been working together, my student's grades have increased by between 15-20% in each subject, taking him from a position where his place in his set was in jeopardy to receiving regular praise from his teachers.
