I am an experienced Teacher of Science who currently works at a school rated outstanding by Ofsted.
My professional qualifications include:
PGCE Secondary with Science BEd graduate.
BSc first class honours degree from the University of Liverpool specialising in Anatomy and Human Biology .
I am a passionate and enthusiastic secondary school science teacher. I have vast experience of working with pupils of all ages and abilities. I have a proven ability of building positive relationships with pupils. I pride myself on building pupil confidence and resilience to ensure that each student makes significant progress. I attend weekly CPD sessions to ensure that my teaching and learning methods are continuously improving; I pride myself on the improvement of my own personal development. I maintain high standards of professionalism at all times.
I have taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics to GCSE level for the previous 5 years. I have experience in teaching gifted and talented pupils in Biology GCSE. In addition, I have vast experience teaching both foundation and higher trilogy science. In addition, I also teach biology A-level.
I am up to date and current with the new grade 9-1 GCSE specification and have succesfully tutored students studying it. They all either achieved or exceeded the grades they wanted, with some students achieveing 9s.
Once we have agreed days and times for our lessons, I will send you a lesson reservation which you will need to accept. I will then call you to find out all the information needed to prepare the first lesson, including predicted and current grades from school. I will also ask for a copy of any past paper examinations and classwork. In addition, I will send an assessment for the student to complete before the first lesson. The purpose of this is to create an individual RAG tracker for each pupil. The RAG tracker is a spreadsheet that has topics in line with the GSCE specification. From the assessment I will RAG the pupils knowledge as red, amber or green. The lessons will focus on red topics first. Homework will focus on green topics to ensure retrieval of content.
The lessons will follow a simple format:
1. A retrieval starter to ensure that pupils are embedding knowledge from previous lessons.
2. Learning new content- pupils will have a mini progress check after each of the three success criteria are taught.
3. Apply learning to new context- pupils will complete an exam question based on new content taught. There will be a key focus on the command words used in each exam question as this is where most pupils lose marks.
4. Self reflection- with my guidance the pupils will self assess and improve their work. Here pupils will see the pattern and trends throughout mark schemes.
After every topic taught there will be an assessment set as homework. This will allow me to assess the progress made by each pupil. All RAG trackers and data of test scores will be shared with parents/ carers so they can see the progress made by their child.
Exam Board Experience
As a Teacher of Science I have vast knowledge of the GCSE assessment requirements of the various exam boards for the new 9-1 GCSE specification. I offer syllabus specific tuition for the following exam boards: AQA, CIE, Edexcel and OCR. All lessons taught will be in line with each exam boards specification.
Furthermore, I am an AQA examiner. As an AQA examiner I am able to gain valuable insight into a range of student responses to ensure that pupils do not make the same misconceptions as their peers across the country.
