I taught English & Maths to years 5 and 6 at a top London prep school. I help children to flourish in English and Maths. As a teacher, writer, and former television producer, my whole approach is to bring real enthusiasm to a child's test prep. I creatively respond to their interests, actively incorporating them into questions. With a sense of humour, I nurture a collaborative relationship. This helps children remember methods and have fun while doing it. With GCSE and A level students, I link the text to the wider world, motivating their understanding of the context.
I taught Year 5 and 6 English and Mathematics at a top London prep school - St Philip's - getting the best out of children of all abilities. I inspire children to improve their grammar and comprehension skills, master concepts in maths and write inventively, and master reasoning tests. I've inspired children at all ages; more than 40 children under my tutelage have discovered their inner abilities in writing and maths; they have also turned around their performance at A level to successfully win university places. I'm also an Oxford trained academic having published in journals and newspapers.
As a year 5 and 6 teacher at a prep school, I follow a structured programme over the year or more that I tutor a student: this means that every lesson includes the required attention to comprehension, grammar and writing, and particular maths skills. An experienced teacher, I have a vast library of bespoke materials proven to work for successful school entry and preparation for GCSEs and A level. I respond to the needs of the child and tailor the material accordingly. I leave homework for children that reinforces what they have learned; and provide accurate scores and guidance each week.

Creative writing sessions are a big part of unlocking test potential. I am completing my first novel on a PhD in Creative Writing, so love drawing out a child's instinctive storytelling skills.
Kids can conquer 11+ and 13+ mathematics with my one on one tutoring. Fun and friendly, I have a range of bespoke materials and will enthuse your child so they look forward to their test prep. Fractions, percentages, and complicated word problems are broken down and demystified. Rigorous practice helps them master concepts. As a prep school teacher, I've developed my own unique explanations.
I respond actively to a child's interests, incorporating them in new maths problems written just for them. So, if a child likes Chelsea or Arsenal, they might get questions on the whiteboard based on Hazard or Aubameyang's seasonal goal tally.
Children learn to tackle comprehension with confidence: how to find the exact spot in the text for answers and explain the higher level evidence that the top schools are looking for. My grammar teaching keeps jargon to a minimum and taps into a child's instinctive understanding from speaking English fluently.
Writing is a highlight of a Numbers and Words class: as a Creative Writing PhD candidate and former journalist, I nurture children's innate story telling skills. I guide them on how to use higher level connectives, openers and punctuation.
Lots of children need a bit of guidance on how to tackle the verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests. At Numbers and Words I breakdown the different types of questions (with words, numbers and shapes) and methods for success. By learning how to narrow down multi-choice options, children gain crucial test experience and confidence.
I draw on years of experience helping children to leap over this hurdle, and have lots of bespoke material to aid this.
Exam Board Experience
Very familiar with 11+, 13+ and the different GCSE exam boards. I am also familiar with preparing foreign students for UKiSet.
Student Success Stories
The vast majority of my students gain places at the top schools (both private and the top grammars) and achieve their potential. I have testimonials from parents and students on successful entry to Haberdasher's, City, UCS, Highgate, Henrietta Barnett, and QE Boys to name but a few. I've also taught children to prepare for Eton, Westminster and St Paul's.
