I firmly believe that your progression starts with YOU. I am a tool for you to use in order to get your grades to where you want them to be. Never doubt, for I will go above and beyond to support your every need and make sure that you are learning and improving within every session you have with me.
I am currently in my first year at Edge Hill University and I am studying Drama and English Literature, a course that I am enjoying very much. It certainly was not easy to get to where I wanted to be but hard work, patience, and commitment got me exactly what I desired and I have no doubt in my mind that you will also get to where you want to be with my support.
My focus is you and I see it as my responsibility to provide regular sessions that you engage with and enjoy in order to progress. I will always act on feedback and focus on the work that you want/ need to go over. Every session of mine is tailored for the learner. I am more than confident in teaching KS1, KS2, KS3 and GCSE English as well provide strong guidance for the 11+ grammar school entrance exams.
I have spent many hours tutoring English and drama to several students across a range of ages. My primary focus so far has been on GCSE English and I have helped many students improve their grades and push themselves in order to excel. I easily adapt to any situation and I am able to make students feel at ease whether they are about to take their GCSE's for their first time or resit as an adult learner.
I always discuss with students where they are at with certain topics and I focus on what they feel they must improve on. Over a planned number of weeks, I provide engaging lessons that challenge the student in order to help them with their progress and at the end of a topic area I always test my students (Questions/ Past Papers/ Assessments) in order to monitor progress.
I structure my lessons in a very simple way. I share my knowledge with the students - taking and answering questions along the way - then I discuss the information with the student and begin to ask them questions to get a feel if they have understood. From here I have the student actively apply what has been taught, for example, if I have been teaching about literary techniques, I will present the student with a text and see if they are able to point out the features we have discussed - without intervention from me. This activity gives me great insight into seeing whether or not the student has grasped not only the work from that session but also other sessions with similar topic matter.
I work in a way that prepares my students for examined work. In English and other creative subjects, written communication and writing skills are extremely important. I focus much of my work on expanding the students knowledge then turning that knowledge into cohesive and accurate written responses. This in turn prepares the student for their exams which they will start writing when appropriate. I will mark all written responses in order to see their progression and to see if they are understanding in order to secure them the best possible grades.
I believe it is my job to help and support the student with their studies and this belief is what greatly impacts the way I view homework. I think homework can be a great tool to show whether or not students are understanding the work, therefore, I will use it whenever necessary.
In regards to lesson planning, I will always plan my lessons. Good lessons need structure and clarity and I believe that by 'winging' each lesson the student is not awarded the full experience or the knowledge they are paying for. I plan each lesson for the needs of the student. Each week I will discuss with my students what they are struggling with and from there I will plan the lesson for the next session. Once again, all of my sessions are tailored for the strengths and weaknesses of that specific student.
Exam Board Experience
I have taught a number of students that are looking at a range of different exam boards and I have no issue in adapting my lessons in order to fit the criteria necessary for each exam.
